Athlete of the Week

The varsity soccer season has just gotten under way over the course of the past two weeks, but two things have been made clear: the Dolphins are for real, and ninth grader Peter Pearson is ready to establish himself as arguably the best player in the TCIS, a feat that he made strides towards as an eighth grader.

In his first varsity season last year Pearson gave the Dolphins a major boost offensively. He totaled 20 goals and earned a 1st team All-TCIS selection, a nod that surely thrust him into the spotlight of opposing coaches.

“He's done really well to handle all the focus opposing teams place on him,” head coach Dave Brun said of Pearson. “And he has stayed within the structure of the team.”

And the structure of the team has been dominant through the first three games of the season, and Pearson has picked up where he left off a year ago. After battling through a preseason injury, one that kept him sidelined through a majority of early season practices, Pearson has shined.

“He told me, ‘You know me, let me get his thing right and rest for a while but I'll go all out come game time,’” Brun said. And all out he has gone.

The Dolphins opened the season with a 4-0 dismantling of Denbigh Baptist, a game that was a precursor to an important TCIS tilt against Bishop Sullivan last Tuesday. Cape Henry was expecting a strong battle with Catholic, but thanks to the efforts of Pearson the Dolphins came away with a convincing 4-1 victory.

Cape Henry employed a possession-style approach to the game, and it had lots of experienced players surrounding Pearson in that effort. From the outset the team took control of the ball and the game, spreading apart the defense, and then Peter took over—despite the fact that he was tightly marked the entire game. He opened the scoring in the first half taking the ball from the center line, through a seam and several defenders before finishing the goal, and when all was said and done he accounted for all four Dolphins goals, including an impressive run and finish off a crafty ball played through from freshman teammate Curtis Kirby.

The 4-1 victory further solidified the Dolphins mark as a team to be reckoned with in the TCIS, and it served notice to the remainder of the conference and the state that Pearson and the veteran Dolphins are going to be a handful to deal with.

“He's done well to make as positive an impact inside of the school as he has on the soccer field,” Brun finished. “He is special.”

Athlete of the Week
Michael Kroll

With high expectations for a dominant 2010 season the Dolphins have relied upon a strong veteran presence to fight off any pressure, and those veterans have played great. The Dolphins just capped off a Division II State Championship to conclude what has been a great season, and the work of this week’s Athlete of the Week, first baseman Michael Kroll, helped Cape Henry position themselves for that title run.

Through the course of the 2010 season Kroll has been consistently productive at the plate, and more recently he has terrorized opposing pitchers. He is 3rd on the team with a .382 batting average, 2nd on the team in slugging percentage with a .650 and has an on base percentage of .480. He has hit seven doubles, three home runs and has driven in 17 runs.

“Michael has contributed to the club’s success in multiple ways throughout the season,” head coach Ryan Morris said. “But his offensive presence in our lineup has made everyone around him better. “

Over the course of the TCIS tournament that couldn’t have been more evident. Kroll helped the Dolphins get into the TCIS championship game, and he did so with consistent and clutch hitting.

Against Hampton Roads Academy on the last day of the regular season, Kroll helped the Dolphins close out an extra innings battle. Tied at 2-2 in the 8th inning, Kroll stepped to the plate and laced a game-winning single to secure the #2 seed in the conference tournament, and he didn’t stop there.

Kroll opened the TCIS tournament on the mound against Norfolk Christian, and he pitched a gem. He confused the Christian batters all day en route to a one-hit victory, securing the Dolphins a spot in the TCIS semifinals against Hampton Roads Academy, and once again Kroll showcased his sense of timing, hitting another game winning single to move Cape Henry into the conference title game.

“Michael has the physical strength and abilities to be one of the better hitters in our league, but his approach is the key to his success,” Morris continued. “His approach at the plate has matured throughout this season, and I believe this is what has sparked the results as of late.”

The late season success helped the Dolphins position themselves well for the Division II state tournament run, and that run ended beautifully. Cape Henry won its opening round game against Atlantic Shores thanks again to Kroll’s timing. Tied 4-4 in the bottom of the 7th inning Michael walked to the plate and launched a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence for the walk off victory. The win secured Cape Henry with another date against Greenbrier Christian, and this time the Dolphins hammered the state’s #1 team. From there, destiny was locked in, and Cape Henry took care of business in the state finals, earning the school its first ever baseball state championship.

“Michaels best tool is his competitive nature,” Morris finished. “When he can control that he can be very dangerous.”

And dangerous he was down the stretch. That production showcased his talents across the state, and it is one of the many reasons the Cape Henry baseball program is celebrating its coronation as the best baseball team in Virginia’s Division 2.

Dolphins Baseball Team Division II State Champions!

By Court Wills

Correspondent

The Virginian Pilot

All Cape Henry Collegiate pitcher Tyler Ballard had to do was look into coach Ryan Morris’ eyes and say “stay with me, coach; I’ll get it done.”

Those words proved to be true as Cape Henry won its first Virginia Independent Schools Division II baseball championship with a 9-3 victory against the Covenant School on Saturday at Shepherd Stadium.

“He just looked at me right in the face and said stay with me, coach … and I said OK,” Morris said. “He’s one of my best competitors and, win or lose, I’m going to stay with him. I knew he would do it for me.”

It was a rough beginning, however, as the Dolphins pitcher gave up three runs in the first inning.

After three innings and still no runs for the Dolphins’ offense, it was time for Morris to huddle with his team on the mound.

“I just tried to tell them to relax and believe in themselves,” he said. “The kids never panicked.”

Cape Henry responded by scoring five runs in the fourth inning, highlighted by Jack Wynkoop’s three-run homer, to grab a 5-3 lead.

“That home run was key,” Morris said.

In the sixth inning, Ballard helped his cause by crushing a two-run home run to center field to bring in Adam Karides, who had doubled.

Reliever Sean Poppen closed out the victory, giving up only a leadoff hit to Sean Rutherford.

Ballard finished with six strikeouts in six innings.

Athlete of the Week
Bryan Wacker

The Dolphins have been on a roll in 2010. With high expectations entering the season Cape Henry suffered two early losses. Those losses did little to dent the Dolphins confidence as the team picked up its collective play to finish the regular season with a 12-4 record, and that successful run happened thanks to players like this week’s Athlete of the Week, Bryan Wacker.

“Bryan has been a huge boost to our club’s offensive surge,” head coach Ryan Morris said of Wacker. “He has done so by being one of the hardest working players in a CHCS uniform. It’s not out of the ordinary to see Bryan working extra after everyone has headed home for the day. Whether it’s extra swings in the cage, extra fly balls, or simply extra conditioning, Bryan puts the time in it takes to excel as a player.”

That extra time has produced results for Wacker, and as a result the Dolphins received another player they could lean on in crunch time. Through the course of the regular season Wacker has batted .422 to go with an on base percentage of .520. The junior has hit 11 singles, six doubles, two home runs and he has driven in 19 runs to go with 15 runs scored of his own.

“Prior to the beginning of the 2010 season Bryan was eager to make strides as a hitter, and was confident he could be more productive for the club,” Morris continued. “He did not look for a shortcut to success, and put in the time and effort to improve.”

And improve he did. But Wacker’s success is not just from the plate, he has been a key member of the pitching staff throughout the course of the season.

Over the course of a three game stretch against Lake Taylor, Walsingham Academy and Hampton Roads Academy, Wacker excelled, and so did the Dolphins. Against Lake Taylor, Bryan went 3 for 3 with two singles, one home run, six RBIs and two runs in a Cape Henry win. He followed that effort in a win against Walsingham with a walk, two singles and two runs. Against HRA, an extra innings victory for the Dolphins, Wacker had a double, two runs scored and was hit by a pitch, but he provided big relief on the mound as well.

Wacker entered the HRA game in the 7th inning with one out and the bases loaded. He allowed no hits and struck out both batters he faced to keep the game tied heading into the bottom of the inning. In the 8th inning he left HRA hitless and gave the Dolphins a chance to win the contest in extra innings.

“Bryan has made a commitment to remain aggressive and trust his stuff, which has made the biggest difference in the results,” Coach Morris finished.

The Dolphins have been getting those results all season thanks to efforts like Wacker’s, and they hope to get more of the same in their postseason run.

Total Team Effort By Girls Lacrosse Falls Just Short Against Bishop Sullivan

In their most intensely battled contest of the season, Cape Henry fell to top seed Bishop Sullivan yesterday, 14-12, in the TCIS semifinals. The Dolphins set the pace, both offensively and defensively, from the first whistle to the last and did not let up once. The Crusaders got on the board early, up by two, but the Dolphins attack answered back with patient and effective play. It was a one goal game for most of the first half with the Dolphins ahead 6-4 until a free position by the Crusaders with :01 remaining in the half cut the Dolphins lead to one. At the start of the second half, Bishop Sullivan immediately tied the score off the draw, but Cape Henry continued to battle. The score was within one goal until the Crusaders were able to convert four straight goals to gain momentum and the biggest lead of the game. Unfazed, the Dolphins stayed in the game, playing exceptionally tenacious defense and working for good offensive opportunities, but fell just short when the final whistle blew. Outstanding play was registered by every Cape Henry player, especially on the defensive end where a Bishop Sullivan player did not get to hold the ball for longer than three seconds before being aggressively double-teamed. Anchoring the defense was again goalie Meghan McKnelly, who posted nine saves on the day, and she was backed by phenomenal play from defenders Alexis Smith, Payton Schaubach and Maddie Houck. Offensively it was a total team effort, with goals tallied by Megan Bradley (one), Regan Haegley (five), Ashmore Standing (three), Alison Riccio (one) and Jordan Mahone (one). The Dolphins now wait to hear their final seeding for next week’s VIS tournament and will likely host a quarterfinal game on Tuesday (4:30pm).
Strong 4th Quarter Spurs Boys Lacrosse to Comeback Victory Over NSA

The Dolphins traveled to Nansemond-Suffolk yesterday to take on the #2 ranked Saints in the TCIS semifinals, and despite a 5-goal fourth quarter deficit Cape Henry scored six unanswered goals to earn an 11-10 victory. John Everett's play in the final quarter was key to the Dolphins victory. Everett won all five face offs taken, giving Cape Henry a major victory in time of possession. From there the Dolphins showcased patience on offense and slowly chipped away at the lead until senior Phil White scored the game-winning goal with 2:19 remaining in the game. The defensive effort of Will Overman (11 saves), Weston Bradley, John Jepson, Neet Patel, William Jordan and Steven Sims clamped down on the Saints offense in the final quarter, giving the Dolphins offense the chance to earn the comeback. Colin Corcoran led Cape Henry with three goals and two assists. John Everett (two goals), Mike Maroon (one goal, four assists), Phil White (one goal, one assist), Austin Curran (one goal), Corey Mavromatis (one goal, one assist) and Garrett Kelly (one goal) rounded out the offense. The #3 ranked Dolphins will travel to Norfolk Academy on Friday to take on the #1 ranked Bulldogs in the TCIS Finals.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK

KAYLEIGH REED

The Dolphins golf team has been dominant in 2010. After a convincing 2009 season that saw Cape Henry earn a TCIS title and a 6th place finish in the state, the Dolphins are a leader in the chase for a second consecutive crown, and the play of this week’s Athlete of the Week, Kayleigh Reed, is a major reason for that success.

The success Kayleigh has had in 2010 is due to the work she has put in to improve her game. Last year Kayleigh shot consistently in the low 80's, but she was never able to get over the hump of breaking 80 regularly. This year has been a different story. Kayleigh is averaging a score of 76.9 through 18 holes, which is good for a place in the top 10 of the TCIS.

“She had the skill to do it last year but not the attitude,” head coach Matt Liebler said of the sophomore. “This year she is finally able to get over that hump because she has changed her mindset. Instead of getting angry at her previous shot she is now able to put it behind her and move on, not wearing her emotions on her sleeve.”

This change in mindset has Kayleigh regularly leading the Dolphins to victory. She has become very consistent with her driver, hitting 77% of fairways, and she is even more consistent with her irons, hitting greens in regulation 81% of the time. On top of those numbers, Kayleigh has made a staggering 24 birdies in nine matches.

“Kayleigh has worked tremendously hard on her game to get to where she is today,” Liebler confirmed. “There is no day that is too cold or wet to keep Kayleigh away from the golf course.”

And that rings true in the offseason as well. Coach Liebler is also the Assistant Golf Professional at The Princess Anne Country Club, and as a result he gets to work with Kayleigh as her swing coach year round. On a rainy day during the offseason Kayleigh called to schedule a lesson for that afternoon, despite the rain. Coach Liebler had the time because all other sane golfers had canceled their appointments. Kayleigh was determined to improve.

“I asked her if she was serious," coach Liebler admitted. “And Kayleigh responded by saying, ‘I'm going to have to some day play in a tournament in the rain and when that day comes I want to be prepared.’ Needless to say I got soaked that day.”

Those long hours of practice have earned Kayleigh three medalist honors this season, and two of those honors came last week against Bishop Sullivan and Greenbrier Christian. Kayleigh scored a 78 in tough, windy conditions against Bishop Sullivan on Tuesday. That 78 helped lead Cape Henry back to the win column after a tough defeat to Walsingham Academy on Monday. She followed that up two days later shooting a career best even par 70 against TCIS rival Greenbrier Christian. The impressive 70 led the Dolphins to their team low score of 302 and another victory, their 8th of the season.

During last week’s three-match span Kayleigh averaged a score of 75 over 18 holes, and the team went 2-1, improving its record to 9-1 overall (7-1 TCIS). The Dolphins currently sit atop the VISAA state polls, and they boast an impressive 14 match winning streak at home.

“Kayleigh has matured and continues to do so,” Liebler finished. “She has such a passion for the game of golf.”

And that passion has proven to be a recipe for success for both Kayleigh and the Dolphins.

Boys Lacrosse Wins Key Match-up Against HRA

Cape Henry hosted Hampton Roads Academy on Tuesday in a key conference and state match-up, and despite heavy rain the Dolphins earned a convincing 11-5 victory. Cape Henry relied on the efforts of goalie Will Overman (13 saves) through a back and forth first quarter as he turned away four shots to keep the score tied at 1-1 heading into the second quarter. From there the Dolphins offense took over. Cape Henry scored four goals in the second to carry a 5-2 lead into the half, and it scored another three in the third quarter to take an 8-2 lead into the final frame. John Everett led the team with three goals and one assist, and he was once again dominant facing off, winning 15 out of 18 draws. Senior Phil White had an outstanding day at attack, scoring two goals while pressuring the HRA defense repeatedly. Mike Maroon was steady in his all-around play, scoring a goal and dishing out two assists while adding a dominant presence on defense and clearing the ball. Garrett Kelly (two goals), Austin Curran (one goal, three assists), Colin Corcoran (one goal), Garrett Deming (one goal) and Will Mason (one assist) rounded out the offensive effort. Weston Bradley, John Jepson and William Jordan played key roles in a defensive effort that frustrated the Crusaders for a majority of the game. Cape Henry looks to build on its two-game winning streak when it travels to Norfolk Academy on Friday afternoon.
Dolphins Golf Team Continue Dominance, Beats HRA

All six varsity golfers broke 80 yesterday as Cape Henry defeated the rain and Hampton Roads Academy at James River Country Club, 306-327. The win helped the Dolphins improve to 9-1 overall (7-1 TCIS) and gain momentum as the team nears post season. The lead group of seniors Cecil Ward (79) and Coles Keeter (77) set the pace as Max Wagner (79) and Mike Ettel (78) followed right behind. The final group of senior Chris Greene (77) and sophomore Kayleigh Reed (74) also held their own to also assist in the victory. Reed used an eagle and three birdies to help her continue her torrid pace and lead the team in scoring once again. Join the Dolphins Friday as they look to extend their home winning streak to 14 matches versus Norfolk Academy. It is the final home match of the season and we will celebrate the careers of seniors Max Wagner, Cecil Ward, Coles Keeter, and Chris Greene. The match is scheduled for 3:00 at the Princess Anne Country Club.
Girls Soccer Perseveres Against HRA for a 5-3 Victory

The Dolphins hosted HRA yesterday in the midst of a downpour, but they persevered through the weather for a 5-3 win. Despite strong play from Cape Henry the team found itself down a goal midway through the first half. An Alexa Liebig penalty kick equalized the score, and a Katie Ellis goal gave the Dolphins a 2-1 lead going into the break. Just after the second half kickoff, Kirby Talbert took the ball outside the HRA defense and set up Ellis with her second goal of the game, putting the Dolphins up 3-1. Cape Henry quickly followed its third goal by adding a fourth, this one off the foot of senior Rachel Law, giving the Dolphins a 4-1 lead. HRA was able to score two goals in a five minute span to narrow the score to 4-3 with minutes to play, but Cape Henry's Sammy White came to the rescue with a goal off of a corner kick to seal the score at 5-3. Maddie Sabol again played well in goal for Cape Henry after recently changing positions, and Nicole Nash was outstanding in defense upon her return to the lineup.

STAB Too Much for Girls Lacrosse

Cape Henry hosted Division II state powerhouse St. Anne's-Belfield on Friday and fell by the final score of 20-8. Though the Dolphins stayed within 4 for much of the first half, STAB broke it open near halftime with a string of fast break opportunities to put the score out of reach. Cape Henry’s offense produced numerous shot opportunities but failed to convert, though the scoring was well dispersed among several key attackers. Jordan Mahone (one goal), Megan Bradley (two goals), Regan Haegley (two goals), Laney Clarke (one goal) and Ashmore Standing (one goal) all contributed to the Dolphins offensive. Defensively, Maddie Houck and Payton Schaubach combined to hold STAB’s two returning All-Americans to a collective five goals on the day, but the depth and speed of the STAB attack outmatched the Cape Henry defense overall on Friday. The Dolphins close regular season play on Friday when they host Norfolk Academy for Senior Day (4pm).

Trailing 7-1 with 10 minutes left in the first half the Dolphins went on the attack to end the half down by just three goals. The second half started with intensity, but the Crusaders were able to convert five free position shots following Dolphins fouls to put the game out of reach at 14-8. Regan Haegley was phenomenal offensively with 3 goals and 1 assist. Maggie Whittemore and Ashmore Standing each added two goals, with Laney Clarke rounding out the scoring with one of her own. Defensively, Maddie Houck, Julie Pawlowski and Payton Schaubach aggressively disrupted the Crusader fast break while Meredith Wallace made 12 saves. The Dolphins continue their week of tough competition when they host Horseheads High School (NY) on Thursday (4pm).

Girls Lacrosse Comeback Bid Falls Short Against St. Catherine's

Cape Henry traveled to St. Catherine's on Saturday, and despite the efforts of Ashmore Standing and Regan Haegley fell 16-13. The Dolphins took an early 3-0 lead to force St. Catherine's to call a timeout. The break worked for St. Catherine's as it went on a 12-2 run, taking a convincing 12-5 lead in the first half. The Dolphins battled in the second half to comeback, but their bid fell short as time expired. Cape Henry had strong play offensively from Standing (six goals) and Haegley (five goals), but their efforts were not enough to secure a win. Laney Clarke and Alison Riccio each added a goal for the Dolphins.

Athlete of the Week
Jack Wynkoop

The Cape Henry baseball team is in the midst of a transition year. The retirement of head coach John Ingram brought new leadership to an already successful program, and the change has been smooth. The Dolphins returned a talented group of veteran players, and after a slow start that talent has proven its worth. The play of this week’s Athlete of the Week, sophomore Jack Wynkoop, is a large reason for that success.

Wynkoop is in his third season with the Dolphins, and he brings a wealth of experience. Jack saw action as an 8th grader on the varsity squad, and that early action turned into a key role with Cape Henry last year. Despite an 0-2 start to the season in 2010, Wynkoop has helped lead the Dolphins on an 8-game winning streak before falling by a run to a talented Maury squad on Wednesday (4/14).

“Jack is very talented player,” head coach Ryan Morris said of the sophomore lefty. “But he brings an added value with his versatility. Jack’s future in baseball most likely will be spent primarily on the mound, but he has continued to develop as a hitter through his work ethic.”

This offensive development has helped spark the Dolphins in times when the bats weren’t always connecting. Through 11 games in 2010 Wynkoop is batting .429, and he has an on-base-percentage (OBP) of .478. He’s 9 for 21 in his plate appearances with three doubles and one triple, and he has driven in six RBIs and scored eight runs.

Defensively, Jack can play all three outfield positions, as well as play first base, and that allows the Dolphins the flexibility of moving other players as needed. He also has proven to be a clutch player.

“Over the course of last week’s competition, Jack’s performance on the mound and at the plate was a boost to our team at the right time,” Morris said. “Norfolk Collegiate and Nansemond-Suffolk were teams who had posted quality wins, and to make a statement in those games was extremely important for our club. Jack’s efforts were key in creating a momentum which catapulted us through that stretch.”

The Dolphins blasted their two TCIS opponents last week. In the first game against Norfolk Collegiate the Dolphins earned a 13-0 victory, and they followed that performance with an equally dominant effort against Nansemond-Suffolk, winning 16-4. Wynkoop was virtually untouchable in those two games. From the mound he had nine strikeouts and gave up just one hit and no runs. From the plate he batted .625 with two doubles, one triple and five RBIs.

“Jack does seem to have a touch of ‘gamer’ in him,” Morris finished. “I’ve noticed that he seems to rise to the occasion when it matters most, and I think that affects everyone around him.”

The Dolphins continued success this season will depend on managing the factors within their control: effort, focus and emotion. Wynkoop has been solid in all three areas throughout the course of the season, and Cape Henry is hoping he continues that success on and off the field as it continues on its TCIS and state quest.

Girls Lacrosse Uses Strong 2nd Half to Surge Past NSA

Cape Henry hosted Nansemond-Suffolk on Thursday afternoon in need of a strong performance, and it got just that. After fighting through a first half nail-biter the Dolphins exploded in the second half. Cape Henry played strong offense and lockdown defense in the second frame as it secured the 14-5 victory. Current Athlete of the Week Ashmore Standing kept her strong play alive by scoring seven goals to lead the Dolphins offense. Laney Clarke added three goals; Regan Haegley had two goals; and Megan Bradley and Alison Riccio each tallied a goal. Defensively Cape Henry had strong performances from Maddie Houck, June Kramer, Megan Bradley and Meghan McKnelly, while Meredith Wallace was strong in goal. The Dolphins look to build on the strong victory when they play Cox High School on Tuesday.
Ballard's Pitching, Dolphins Offense Blasts NSA

The Dolphins traveled to Nansemond-Suffolk yesterday for a key conference match-up, and they wasted little time blasting their way to victory. Cape Henry scored 12 runs in the first three innings and cruised to a 16-4 victory. Carrying a 12-4 lead into the top of the fifth inning the Dolphins scored four more runs to close out the 12 run victory. Tyler Ramirez led the charge with three hits, and Michael Kroll had two hits and four RBIs. Tyler Ballard was the winning pitcher for Cape Henry, building his record to 3-1 on the season. The Dolphins (7-2, 4-0 TCIS) play next on Tuesday when they travel to Peninsula Catholic.
Boys Tennis Rolls Over NSA

Girls Soccer Ties NSA Despite Controlling the Action

The Dolphins traveled to Nansemond-Suffolk yesterday and returned home with a 3-3 tie. Cape Henry dominated play for most of the game but couldn’t hold on to the lead in the final minutes. The Dolphins took a 2-0 lead on goals from Katie Ellis and Katherine Burniske, but the Saints were able to tie the score in the second half. Ellis struck again to give Cape Henry a 3-2 lead, but NSA was able to equalize the game during injury time, sending it in to overtime. The Dolphins once again dominated the overtime period but could not come away with a goal.
Reed, Ettel Pace Golf Team to 5h Straight Victory

The Varsity golf team continued to roll on Thursday afternoon as it defeated Nansemond-Suffolk Academy 305-363 at the Princess Anne Country Club. The win allowed the Dolphins to remain undefeated (5-0, 3-0 TCIS) and extended their home winning streak to 11 matches. Sophomores Kayleigh Reed and Michael Ettel both led the Dolphins with 75's, wining co-medalist honors. Chris Greene continued his solid senior season by shooting his second 77 of the year. Another bright spot was the play of Freshman Jake Richardson. Jake, playing in just his second varsity match, shot a steady 8 over par 78. Senior captains Max Wagner and Cecil Ward continued to provide valuable leadership while continuing their steady play. The Dolphins look to remain undefeated and extend their home winning streak to 12 when they host Peninsula Catholic on Tuesday at the Princess Anne Country Club.

Cape Henry Athlete of the Week
Ashmore Standing

The 2010 season has been full of adversity for the varsity girls lacrosse team. With the graduation of a few key players over the last two seasons, the Dolphins have infused a youth movement to take the program back to the level it is accustomed, and this week’s Athlete of the Week, junior Ashmore Standing, is at the center of that movement.

Standing has been at Cape Henry for two years, competing with both the field hockey and lacrosse teams, and she has displayed her competitiveness and tenacity on both fields. She has been named a 1st team All TCIS player for the past two seasons (2008, 2009), and she is on her way for a third straight selection to that squad. In addition to being named 1st team All TCIS in 2009, Standing finished the season 4th on the TCIS scoring list.

“She is instantly recognizable on the field for her lightning fast speed coupled with an insatiable drive to score,” head coach Jen Baker said of Ashmore. “She plays with the game sense of a player far more seasoned. Her sense of timing on offense provides her with endless opportunities to score, and she very consistently converts on those opportunities—whether it’s taking the shot herself or drawing the double or triple team and making the outlet pass to someone else who can take the shot. ”

That ability to score allowed Ashmore to tally 45 goals and nine assists last season. She added 31 draw controls, 17 ground balls, 14 forced turnovers and 1 interception, which were key to the Dolphins gaining possession. So far in the 2010 season Ashmore has scored 17 goals and dished out three assists, but it’s the intangibles she brings to the team that has made the most impact.

“She just doesn’t give up and she loves to compete,” Baker continued. “She doesn’t get shaken by physical contact or high stress games. She stays focused on the ball and tries to force the other team to make mistakes that she can then capitalize on. She has proved that she can outrun, dodge and score against the very best of teams, and we have faced some of the best this year without question. She’s very positive with her teammates, but at the same time holds them to a high standard and tries to encourage them to be better.”

Over the course of the past week the Dolphins lost in the final minute to Norfolk Collegiate 16-15, the second time Cape Henry has fallen by that score in the final minute this season. In the loss Standing posted five goals and one assist in addition to gaining 11 draw controls. She showed no quit in the back and forth contest, and she put forth everything she had until the last second elapsed. The Dolphins followed that disappointing outcome with a 17-4 loss to a powerful Springfield (PA) program. Standing stood tall against the lofty competition by scoring three of Cape Henry’s four goals, and she was still driving to the cage at the end of the game despite the large deficit.

“She is devastated when we lose,” Baker finished. “Being on that field really means something to her, and she is very disappointed when it doesn’t go our way. In a season that is likely going to be remembered for the lessons taken from the field she is perhaps going to grow the most—and her teammates from her example—because she exemplifies all that is great about athletic competition. She perseveres, she is tenacious, she plays through physical adversity, and she never gives up no matter how frustrating the game. At the end of the day, sports are worthwhile not for the stats or for the record you compile, but for what you learn on the field about yourself and about being a part of a team, and Ashmore is a great example of the bigger picture of competition.”

Athlete of the Week
Will Overman

The boys lacrosse team is in the process of going through a complete program turnover. Over the course of the past three years the team has graduated a majority of its varsity athletes, leaving just three seniors on the 2010 team. As a result many young student-athletes have been pressed into action and are trying to maintain the historical success of program. One of the lynchpins to that expected resurgence is this week’s Athlete of the Week, sophomore goaltender Will Overman.

Overman began his varsity career as an eighth grader at Cape Henry. Splitting time between the JV and varsity teams, Overman was able to watch and learn from one of the best goaltenders the Dolphins have ever had, former all state player TJ Spera. Will served as the starting goalie for the JV team that season but was also pressed into action as the varsity back-up during non-conflicting contests. Upon his move to the upper school the fast forward button was pushed on Overman’s varsity career.

“Physically he was ready for the step to the varsity level,” head coach Charlie Lonergan said. “He was and is one of our best athletes, but as is the case for many young athletes the biggest challenge was his mental focus and confidence. Over the course of the past season and a half, though, Will has constantly improved in those areas.”

Overman started all 17 games in his freshman season, and he posted totals of 150 saves while giving up an average of 8.6 goals/game. Through eight games in 2010, Overman has posted 64 saves and helped the Dolphins to a 4-4 record.

“His ability as a pure goaltender is what he leans on in tough times,” Lonergan continued. “However, Will faces constant challenges on top of just saving the ball. He is tasked with being one of our defensive leaders, and as a result he helps make all of our defensive and clearing calls. For any player that is a challenge, and that’s especially true for a young player.”

Despite the workload and level of expectations Will is constantly improving, and that fact was obvious during the Dolphins slate of competition last week. After falling in a tough contest to start the week against Collegiate School, Cape Henry played back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday against Christchurch School and Norfolk Collegiate, both key divisional games. Overman and the defense were dominant in both.

In a rain and wind-soaked game against Christchurch on Friday, Overman led a defensive effort that allowed Christchurch just three goals. The Dolphins gave up just one goal in the first half, and Overman had to make just a single save in doing so, but Christchurch picked up the pace in the second half. Despite its extra efforts, Christchurch was absolutely stonewalled. Overman posted seven second half saves to help the Dolphins preserve a 5-3 victory. With very little time to enjoy the spoils of victory, the Dolphins hit the road on Saturday to face TCIS rival Norfolk Collegiate, and again Overman helped lead a strong defensive effort. With the offense having trouble finding its rhythm early on, the Dolphins found themselves in a heated battle into the second half. After giving up just one goal throughout the first half, the Oaks were able to capitalize twice in the third quarter, cutting Cape Henry’s advantage to 5-3 heading into the fourth quarter. Overman and the defense shut the door on the Oaks in the final quarter, and the Dolphins surged ahead to an 8-3 victory.

“A goalie must have a screw or two loose in order to be successful,” Lonergan finished. “In his own unique way Will fits that mold perfectly. He is the lone player I have coached who gets pumped up before a game by playing his mandolin to his teammates. As a goalie he has yet to reach his potential, but I have little doubt that he will do so. Will is a driven student-athlete, and for as long as he sets goals to achieve I believe he will find a way to meet those goals.”

Boys Lacrosse Struggles Against St. Christopher's, Falls 14-4

The Dolphins carried a two-game winning streak on the road to St. Christopher's Tuesday afternoon, but the Saints used a six goal second quarter to carry it to a 14-4 victory over Cape Henry. The Dolphins opened the game with poise and confidence, battling to a 4-3 deficit heading into the second quarter, but the Saints six unanswered second quarter goals left Cape Henry reeling. The Dolphins held strong in the third quarter, giving up one goal with a strong defensive effort, but the deficit was too large to overcome. Austin Curran had two goals while Colin Corcoran and Mike Maroon each added one. John Everett was dominant on face offs, winning 90% of the game's draws.
Girls Lacrosse Falls in Final Minute to Norfolk Collegiate

In yesterday’s critical conference match-up Cape Henry fell by one goal in the final minute of the game, 16-15. Down by four early in the first half, the Dolphins rallied offensively to tie the score and notch ahead by one. The Oaks regained the lead before halftime, but the Dolphins answered yet again two more times to end the first half at a tie score. The second half proved to be just as exciting as the first, with the lead trading back and forth four different times before the Oaks got a fast break and held the ball from the Dolphins to close out the game. Outstanding play was recorded by Ashmore Standing with five goals, one assist and 11 draw controls. Also contributing on offense were Maggie Whittemore (one goal, three assists), Megan Bradley (two goals), Laney Clarke (three goals), Alison Riccio (one assist) and Regan Haegley (one goal, two assists). Excellent defensive play was posted by Maddie Houck and Meghan McKnelly. The Dolphins (1-5) host northeastern powerhouse Springfield HS (PA) on Thursday (4pm).

Boys Lacrosse Wins Two Straight, Beating Christchurch and Norfolk Collegiate With Strong Defensive Efforts

The Dolphins hosted Christchurch School on Friday, and despite sloppy game conditions worked their way to a 5-3 victory. Will Overman led Cape Henry with a strong second half effort in goal, stopping six shots in the third and fourth quarters to preserve the win. The offense was led by Garrett Kelly (two goals), Colin Corcoran (two goals, one assist) and Austin Curran (one goal). Garrett Deming added an assist while having a strong contribution on the defensive end of the field, and Mike Maroon was strong defensively as well. John Everett controlled the face offs, winning eight out of 10 draws. John Jepson, Weston Bradley, Sam Law, Nick Anderson and William Jordan also pitched in with strong defensive efforts.

On Saturday Cape Henry traveled to Norfolk Collegiate to play the second half of a back-to-back slate of games. The Dolphins dominated the course of the game, winning 8-3 despite an inconsistent offensive effort. The defense was strong for the second game in a row, as Will Overman, John Jepson, Weston Bradley, Sam Law, Nick Anderson and William Jordan helped limit the Oaks to just three goals. Colin Corcoran paced the offense with two goals and two assists. Austin Curran and Garrett Kelly followed suit with two goals apiece, while Mike Maroon and Will Mason each added a goal.

Puglisi Scores Game Winner as Girls Soccer Upends NSA

After an outstanding performance at the sweeper position, and the game remaining a scoreless draw, sophomore Jessica Puglisi advanced forward and scored the game winner with four minutes to play in the match, giving Cape Henry the 1-0 victory. Goalkeeper Bridget Swift notched her second shutout of the year and was helped tremendously from the performance of Alexa Liebig, Stephanie White, Avi Goldman and Khajae Hester. Forwards Katie Ellis and Rachel Law kept pressure on the opposing goal throughout the game. It was the team’s increased determination in the game’s final 10 minutes which proved to be the difference on the afternoon. The Dolphins begin conference play on the road today (Friday) at Walsingham Academy. Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m.

Clarke's 5 Goals Leads Girls Lacrosse Team Past NSA

In a closely contested game, Cape Henry posted its first win of the season against TCIS opponent Nansemond-Suffolk Academy yesterday in Suffolk, 12-10. Tied 5-5 at the half, the Dolphins pulled ahead early into the 2nd quarter, but the Saints answered back to tie the score. Despite tying the score the Saints never managed to pull ahead, and Cape Henry outlasted them in time of possession, winning by two in the end. Laney Clarke was a standout for Cape Henry, notching five goals and causing a turnover. Regan Haegley also added three goals and three assists of her own, and Alison Riccio, Megan Bradley, and Jordan Mahone also tallied one each for the Dolphins. Defensively June Kramer and Alexis Smith dominated the Saints attack while goalie Payton Schaubach posted numerous saves in the 2nd half to keep the win out of NSA’s reach. Cape Henry competes in a Play Day at Norfolk Academy on Saturday at 1:30 and look to build on their momentum Tuesday when they travel to conference stalwart Norfolk Collegiate (4pm).
Watkins Leads Softball Past Norfolk Christian For 1st Victory of 2010

The Dolphins faced Norfolk Christian on Thursday afternoon hoping to secure their first win of 2010, and they did just that, winning 12-5. Bailey Watkins pitched another complete game for Cape Henry, giving up only four hits. The Dolphins started their attack in the second inning scoring seven of their 12 runs. On Offense Bailey Watkins went 2 for 2 with two walks, and newcomer Alex Saal went 2 for 4. On Defense Jenna Sedjat made a nice play catching a hard hit ground ball to second, and Kristen Parnigoni scooped a ball thrown in the dirt at first securing the third out of the 4th inning. The Dolphins continue to show progress through the early part of the season, and they hope to pack the stands at their next home game on March 30th against Tabernacle Academy.
ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
THOMAS HOSKINS

Crew is one of the more unrecognizable sports at Cape Henry. The Dolphins varsity rowers often walk the hallways unnoticed, but their training efforts and regimen are often times more challenging than any other varsity sport. To compete on the crew team an athlete needs to have the mental toughness to challenge themselves everyday to push the envelope further and further, and this week’s Athlete of the Week, sophomore Thomas Hoskins, embodies that spirit.

The crew team is a small group who works very hard in the shadow of other athletic programs, and Thomas is no exception to that rule. Thomas competes as a member of the men’s varsity 4 boat, but at the same time he competes for a community hockey team outside of Cape Henry athletics. Often times the conflicting schedules pose challenges that few other student-athletes have to contend with, but Thomas has lived up to the billing successfully.

“Thomas participates in a community hockey league, and he ranks as one of their top skaters,” head crew coach Rebecca Leonard said of Hoskins. “Not only does he excel on the ice, he has never missed a crew practice—

including extended practices held for his boat only.”

And this past Saturday was no exception. With both a hockey tournament and crew regatta scheduled for the same day, Hoskins lived up to his commitments to both teams. Participating in his final hockey tournament of the season during the first part of the day, Hoskins skated through multiple games, but that didn’t seem to affect his performance in the boat. Rowing with the varsity 4 in the EVSRA regatta on Saturday at the Norfolk Botanical Gardens, Hoskins helped the varsity 4 power its way to an open-water, 1st place finish.

“Academically, Tom is a hard worker and achiever,” Leonard finished. “He also participates with the Robotics club. He excels and manages his education and athletics admirably, and still remains a positive and influential person at the same time.”

Hoskins is one of a number of young, hard workers on the crew team, but despite their youth the Dolphins are finding early success. A good portion of last weekend’s success is due to the effort and commitment of Hoskins, and his teammates are hoping that success continues.

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
WILL MASON - State Champion

This week’s Athlete of the Week, sophomore Will Mason, has had a season of highs. He’s established himself as one of the best overall wrestlers in state competition, and he dominated his weight class in the 2010 season. This was no more evident than during last weekend’s private schools state championship meet.

“Our schedule was tougher this past season,” head coach Jack Effner said. “I thought it was real important to make sure our team was challenged so we could reach our potential and be ready for the post-season.”

Consider that goal a success. The Dolphins dominated the TCIS throughout the course of the season, and positioned a number of wrestlers into contention at the state level. Mason built a 37-3 record over the course of the year, and he manhandled the competition in an undefeated run to a conference championship in the 103 lb weight class.

But his expertise goes beyond the 103 lb weight class and beyond private school competition.

“Will has beaten several of the public school's district, regional, and state competitors,” Effner continued. “In fact he beat the 103 lb public school state champion earlier this season. We even moved him up a weight class for competitive reasons and he beat one 112 lb district champion.”

And that variety of competition paid off this past weekend in the state championship meet.

“He dominated his first three opponents with hand-fighting, aggressive leg attacks, and punishing top wrestling,” Effner said of Will’s performance last weekend. “His finals opponent was an even battle. He faced him back in early January and won in overtime. In that match he fell behind early but finished strong pulling out a victory. The state finals match was 0-0 after one period. His opponent chose the bottom position and did not get out. This is definitely one of Will's strengths, he can hold you down and put you on your back. He then finished off the match with great scrambles pulling out a 2-1 victory.”

The 2-1 victory locked up Mason’s second straight state title at the 103 lb weight class, and it sets up an exciting weekend at the upcoming National Prep Championships. Mason is a reigning All-American in the same weight class he is competing in this year, and he figures to battle for a national title. He will most likely get the #2 seed in the 103 lb weight class, but the grouping has five or six wrestlers that are capable of winning the championship. Regardless of the competition, Mason’s intangibles figure to have him in the title picture.

“Will pays attention to the top wrestlers at all levels,” said Effner. “He has the discipline and dedication to prepare well, and a fierce warrior mentality in practice and competition. He practices being tough on a daily basis. With all this his biggest asset is his belief in himself and his competitive nature.

“When he steps out on the mat he knows how to turn the switch on, and when off he is the most fun and personable guy to be around,” Effner finished. “Opposing coaches often comment on his high level of intensity, yet he’s always the sportsman on and off the mat. He is the kind of person that brings out the best in all he is around. We’re hoping it is his weekend. Regardless of the outcome, history has shown he will put on a great show.”
POLLARD, ALLEN LEAD DOLPHINS PAST THE OAKS IN TCIS TOURNEY

Demetrius Pollard dropped in a game high 26 points to lead the Dolphins past Norfolk Collegiate last night in the first round of the TCIS tournament. Cape Henry opened up a 45-24 halftime advantage and never looked back from there, sealing the 22-point victory. Terrell Allen followed suit with a dominant 19 points and 19 rebounds, while George Radford dropped in 16 points as he continued his hot shooting (five 3-pointers). Cecil Ward (six points), Devon Hall (five), Connor LaFramboise (three), Mike Maroon (two) and Chris Campbell (one) rounded out the offense. The win sets the date for a rubber-match with Norfolk Academy tonight in Bulldog country (7pm). The Dolphins beat NA in their first game of the season, but the Bulldogs avenged that loss last week with a last second victory on their home court. Cape Henry hopes to take the season series tonight.
