RADFORD, POLLARD LEAD BOYS BASKETBALL PAST GCA

Cape Henry traveled to Greenbrier Christian last night and took home an 83-41 victory. George Radford was once again on fire from 3-point land, hitting six 3-pointers in the first half and finishing with seven total 3-pointers en route to 21 points. Demetrius Pollard was equally as impressive, knocking down four 3-pointers on his way to a game-high 24 points. Pollard scored 18 points in the third quarter alone. Terrell Allen finished with nine points and 12 rebounds. The remainder of the Dolphins offense came from Connor LaFramboise (nine points), Aaron Drory (six), Chris Campbell (six), Devon Hall (four) and Mike Maroon (three). The win improved Cape Henry to 16-4 (6-1), and the Dolphins look to build on that streak when they visit Norfolk Academy on Saturday night (7pm).

CAPE HENRY ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
ZENIYA TROWELL

The Dolphins faced their first rough patch of the season two weeks ago. After an undefeated 13-0 start, the Dolphins ran into a tough Norfolk Christian squad that dealt them their first loss. Cape Henry followed that effort by squeaking out a two-point win over TCIS rival Walsingham Academy. Since that time, though, the Dolphins have found their niche once again, and a good portion of credit goes to this week’s Athlete of the Week, Zeniya Trowell.

Trowell is nearly unmatched in both her size and ability, and she has been a dominating force in the paint for Cape Henry. Since the Norfolk Christian loss the Dolphins have won four straight contests, and each win has been against conference opponents. Heading into last week Cape Henry built a two-game winning streak over Walsingham and Nansemond-Suffolk, but their next opponent, Norfolk Collegiate, was ranked #1 in the state private school Division 2 polls.

“As a team we were determined to win,” head coach Richard Plank said of the game against the Oaks. “That determination started with Zeniya. She finished the game on the bench after fouling out, but while on the court she dominated scoring. All of this while helping defensively contain one of the most explosive players in the TCIS.”

Trowell held Markell Smith, one of the best the TCIS has to offer, to just 13 points, and the Dolphins continued showcasing their mettle in the 45-34 victory. The win put the rest of the conference on notice. Cape Henry had surged to a 13-0 mark proving that they can play basketball, but its post-defeat resurgence has let all opponents know that they can handle adversity. In addition, beating the #1 team in the state rebuilt a large measure of confidence, and for Trowell, matching up with one of the best in the conference proved her place in the league.

“Zeniya is a dominant player,” Plank continued. “Whenever she steps on the floor, teams are always having to account for her. She is often times double and even triple teamed down in the post. She has learned not only how to create shots for herself but how to use her size to create shots for her teammates.”

Against Norfolk Collegiate Trowell clearly frustrated the Oaks with her defensive presence, but equally as impressive was her play on the offensive half of the court. Zeniya dominated the Oaks defense to the tune of 12 points, 14 rebounds, four steals and four blocks before fouling out late in the fourth quarter.

“Zeniya is a very determined player,” Plank finished. “She creates a lot of space for herself and even when she doesn’t block a shot, opponents often have to adjust their shot just to get it off.”

Trowell followed her effort against Norfolk Collegiate with 17 points and 10 rebounds in a lopsided victory over Peninsula Catholic on Monday night, and she followed suit with 10 points in a big Dolphins victory over Bishop Sullivan on Tuesday night. On the season Trowell leads the team in rebounds (8.8/game) and blocks (1.5/game), and she is shooting 47% from the field.

With three conference games remaining to determine postseason positioning, the Dolphins are on track for a top seed in both the conference and the state tournaments, and Trowell is poised for a strong postseason run.
POLLARD LEADS BOYS BASKETBALL TO IMPORTANT WIN OVER BISHOP SULLIVAN

Cape Henry hosted Bishop Sullivan last night for another important TCIS contest, and the Dolphins grabbed a 67-54 victory. The win improves the #2 ranked Dolphins to 15-4 overall, and it built their conference record to 5-1. Cape Henry led 30-24 at halftime, and a strong second half performance from Demetrius Pollard helped close the win. Pollard led all scorers with 29 points, and he scored 10 of those 29 in the fourth quarter. Terrell Allen chipped in with a double-double, scoring 12 points. George Radford stroked two 3-pointers for six of his 13 points, and Devon Hall added 10 points of his own while facing the team his father coaches. Chris Campbell chipped in three points for the Dolphins. Cape Henry looks to continue their strong conference record when it faces Greenbrier Christian on Thursday (7pm).

HESTER'S 16 POINTS LEADS GIRLS BASKETBALL TO BIG WIN OVER BISHOP SULLIVAN

The Dolphins faced one of their greatest challenges of the season last night against Bishop Sullivan. Squaring off against one of the more talented teams in the conference, the game had huge postseason implications for both teams, and Cape Henry did not disappoint. Led by the charge of Khajae Hester's 16 points, seven assists and four steals, the Dolphins built their record to 18-1 overall (5-1 TCIS) with a 46-35 win. Cape Henry led by three points at halftime (19-16) and was able to hold on for the hotly contested road victory. Zeniya Trowell continued her dominance in the paint with 10 points, while La'Bria Wilson (seven points), Alexis Smith (six), Karen Campbell (five), and Amalia Ries (two) rounded out the Dolphins offense. Cape Henry looks to continue its strong finish when it sqaures off against Greenbrier Christian on Thursday (6pm).

Radford's Sharpshooting Buries Peninsula Catholic

The Dolphins traveled to Peninsula Catholic last night and dominated from start to finish, winning 88-30 over their TCIS counterparts. Cape Henry used a 3-point barrage to silence Peninsula Catholic, and junior George Radford led the charge. Radford dropped in a season-high 10 3-pointers on his way to outscoring the opponent himself (33 points). Demetrius Pollard followed suit with four 3-pointers of his own as he totaled 18 points. Newcomer Chris Campbell dropped in 13 points, and the remaining offense came from Terrell Allen (eight points), Connor LaFramboise (six), Cecil Ward (four), Aaron Drury (four) and Devon Hall (two). The Dolphins rebound quickly as they host Bishop Sullivan tonight (7pm).
Trowell and Smith's Double-Doubles Lead Dolphins to Romp

Cape Henry hosted Peninsula Catholic last night and used a devastating first half to bury their TCIS counterpart, winning 70-27. The Dolphins blasted out to a 13-0 first quarter lead and built that to a 31-5 halftime advantage. From there the contest was a foregone conclusion. The Dolphins were led by Zeniya Trowell's double-double, 17 points and 10 rebounds. Trowell had four blocked shots as well. Alexis Smith added 11 points and 11 rebounds for her own double-double. La'Bria Wilson had eights points, and Khajae Hester had six points. Meredith Wallace (six points), Brianna Perry (six), Amalia Riess (three) and Payton Schaubach (two) rounded out the offense. Jennifer Harter added three assists for Cape Henry. The Dolphins look to build on last night's performance with a big contest against Bishop Sullivan Tuesday night (7pm).
Dolphins Beat Peninsula Catholic to Complete Undefeated TCIS Regular Season Record

The Dolphins hosted Peninsula Catholic last night for their final regular season dual meet, and they capped off an undefeated TCIS year with a 64-6 victory. Cape Henry won 11 out of 12 matches en route to their 11th win of the season. The Dolphins had wins from Josh Lim, Scott Cunningham, Kyle Mytelka, Thomas Armistead, Greg Noordanus and Tanner Baine, and they received forfeit victories from Jackson Law, Daniel Vickers, Sam Law, Peter Rabogliatti and Russell Sanders. The Dolphins now turn their attention to Saturday's TCIS meet where they look to earn their second consecutive conference tournament championship.
