BOYS AND GIRLS BASKETBALL HANDLE COX
IN TUESDAY NIGHT DOUBLEHEADER

The boys and girls basketball teams hosted a double-header Tuesday night with neighborhood rival Cox High School. In the early game, the girls used a 23-10 first half advantage to take home their 10th straight win of the season, 48-24. The boys did not disappoint in the back end of the double-header. Terrell Allen returned from injury to score 30 points and grab 19 rebounds in the Dolphins 79-54 victory.

In the girls’ game, freshman Alexis Smith turned in another gem of a performance. Smith led all scorers with 16 points, and she had six steals as well. Khajae Hester dropped in 13 points of her own while running the show from the point. Zeniya Trowell had 10 points; Amalia Riess added six points on two 3-pointers; and La’Bria Wilson finished the scoring with three points on one 3-pointer. The Dolphins are an impressive 10-0 on the season, and they look to continue their unblemished run when they host Granby on Thursday (7pm).

On the boys side of things, the Dolphins used a dominant second half to seal the victory. Cape Henry was leading by 10 at halftime (44-34), but it surged forward to a 35-20 second half run to grab the 25-point win. Allen was a force with a double-double, and junior Athlete of the Week Demetrius Pollard was exceptional as well. Pollard scored 22 points (three 3-pointers), grabbed six rebounds and dished out four assists. George Radford turned in one of his most productive outings of the season as he caught fire from beyond the arc. Radford sunk five three pointers for a total of 15 points. The remainder of the offense came from Connor LaFramboise (five points), Devon Hall (three), Cecil Ward (two) and Michael Kroll (two). The win improves Cape Henry to 8-3 overall. CHCS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
DEMETRIUS POLLARD

After a season of ups and downs a year ago, the #2 ranked Dolphins boys basketball team has found their stride early in the 2010 season. Cape Henry lost a couple key seniors from a year ago, but they return significant talent, along with a few additions. Talent alone does not get the job done, though. The Dolphins have matured quite a bit since last season, and at the head of that list is this week’s Athlete of the Week, Demetrius Pollard.

“Demetrius has matured on the court this year to become one of the most dominant players in Hampton Roads,” head coach Larry Ward said. “His ability to score the basketball from beyond the arc, coupled with his ability to take it inside has really made him a force to be reckoned with. He should be the best perimeter player on the court each and every night.”

The 2009 season served as a transition year for Pollard. New to Cape Henry he not only had to learn the competition and style of Cape Henry basketball, but he had to learn a new lifestyle within the classrooms and hallways of the school. Clearly more comfortable with his surroundings in his second year as a Dolphin, Pollard has begun to strike fear in the opposition.

And this hasn’t just happened by chance.

“The dedication of off-season workouts has paid huge dividends for him,” Ward continued. Pollard combined work in the weight room with a heavy dose of basketball. The Dolphins assistant coach Frankie Cabrera helped tutor Pollard in the off-season, and he has grown to become one of Hampton Roads most talented players in his class.

After having a solid showing in the Bayside High School Invitational the Dolphins traveled to the Steward Invitational for competition on Friday and Saturday. This is where Pollard had his coming out party. Cape Henry opened the tournament on Friday against Trinity Episcopal, and Pollard dropped in 20 points en route to a 70-47 Dolphins rout. While that was an impressive game, Pollard and the Dolphins raised eyebrows with their performance in the finals against tournament host Steward School.

Fighting through the loss of senior Terrell Allen, who went down with a leg injury in the opening minutes of the game, Pollard took over. When all was said and done Cape Henry took home the Championship trophy with a 66-57 win, and Pollard was responsible for 38 of the 66 points (he dropped in five 3-pointers in the two games as well).”

“Demetrius stepped up and played an amazing game,” Ward finished. “The official looked over at me with 30 seconds left and said ‘this guy is a talent’ and what a night he has had. I don’t think that he took a bad shot all night long, and when the extra pass needed to be made he made it. That is what separates the good players from the great players. If he continues to play at this high level I anticipate that life will become a little easier for Terrell and our other players.”

And that would be a timely relief for the Dolphins. Cape Henry is 7-3 through 10 games, and it starts a busy stretch this week, taking on Cox, Atlantic Shores and First Colonial in a matter of five days. When the Dolphins conclude that stretch they launch into their TCIS schedule, and the results of those games will determine their postseason fate. With Pollard continuing to make his mark on the program and the region, the stretch run is shaping up nicely for the Dolphins.

#2 RANKED DOLPHINS WIN STEWARD INVITATIONAL;
POLLARD NAMED TOURNAMENT MVP

The Dolphins traveled to the Steward Invitational on Friday for a two-day tournament, and they returned to Cape Henry with hardware in tow. They started off Friday with a lopsided 70-47 victory over Trinity Episcopal, and they finished the weekend with a 66-57 Championship Game victory over tournament host Steward School. Demetrius Pollard was named tournament MVP and Cecil Ward was selected to the All-Tournament team. Pollard finished the two game stretch with 58 points, including five 3-pointers. Terrell Allen led all scorers against Trinity Episcopal on Friday with 24 points, but he injured his thigh in the opening minutes of the game against Steward and did not finish the tournament. George Radford finished the weekend with 22 points, Devon Hall had 18 points in the two games, Connor Laframboise added seven points, and Cecil Ward had a point to go with a strong defensive weekend. Cape Henry is now 7-3 overall, and it hosts Cox on Tuesday (7pm).
SMITH, HESTER LEAD DOLPHINS IN ROMP OVER ATLANTIC SHORES

The Dolphins hosted Atlantic Shores on Saturday and put forth a dominant effort in a 61-25 victory. The Dolphins stormed out to a 34-8 halftime lead and never looked back from there. Alexis Smith led all scorers with 22 points, 20 of which came in the first half. Khajae Hester followed suit with 15 points and nine assists. The remainder of the offense came from La’Bria Wilson (nine points), Amalia Riess (six), Brianna Perry (five) and Zeniya Trowell (four). The win improved the Dolphins record to 9-0, and sets up a showdown with hood rival Cox on Tuesday night (5:30pm).
LAW, MASON AND CUNNINGHAM SHINE FOR DOLPHINS
IN THE VIRGINIA DUALS

Cape Henry traveled to the Virginia Duals for a two-day competition on Friday and Saturday, and they finished with a 1-2 record after going up against stiff out-of-state competition. The Dolphins lost to two schools from New Jersey, but they earned a quality win over Chesapeake’s Grassfield High School (40-35). Will Mason and Sam Law led the charge for Cape Henry with three wins apiece. Scott Cunningham finished with two wins, and Kyle Mytelka, Greg Noordanus, Christian Law, Justin Lee, and Tanner Baine each finished with one win. The Dolphins are 6-3 overall and 1-0 in the TCIS, and they have a conference showdown at Norfolk Academy on Wednesday afternoon (5pm).
