CHCS ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
JOSH LIM

The Cape Henry wrestling program approached the TCIS tournament Saturday with one goal in mind: repeat. The Dolphins had four returning individual champions, and they were hopeful to have the addition of a few more step up to achieve team expectations. This week’s Cape Henry Athlete of the Week, Josh Lim, did just that.

“Josh has been a success story,” head coach Jack Effner confirmed. “He only started wrestling last season and has made great strides because of his attitude and work ethic.”

Lim began his wrestling career a year ago in the 145 lb weight class, and he wasn’t able to crack the starting line-up all year. That changed this season. Josh recommitted himself to a healthier lifestyle, dropped 25 lbs and solidified the starting rotation in the 119 lb weight class.

“He wasn’t cutting weight,” Effner said. “He simply made smart decisions with his eating habits and worked out more. He has been our 119 lb starter this season and is in the best shape of his life.”

The dedication Josh showed in the offseason worked wonders for him during the regular season, and the team couldn’t have been happier. Lim went an unblemished 7-0 against TCIS competition this season (10-8 overall), and this past weekend he further solidified his success.

The Dolphins played host to the TCIS tournament on Saturday, and Josh turned in one of the most exciting days of any wrestler in the conference. Lim went 3-0 on the day, and earned an individual TCIS title while helping the Dolphins to another team title, but it was how he did that impressed all.

Josh opened with a third period pin over his opponent from Norfolk Academy, and then he went to work getting the crowd on their feet. After falling early in his second match against Norfolk Collegiate Josh turned on his will to win. With his teammates cheering him on Josh forced an overtime period, and he was the first to score a point in the sudden victory frame. And as if that wasn’t enough, Lim secured his second pin of the day in his final match. Squaring off against Bishop Sullivan, Lim once again proved his inner drive and came back for a thrilling pin to conclude his tournament sweep.

“He did it with effort and drive, and never gave up despite in-match odds,” said Effner. “Josh is a team favorite because of his attitude and work ethic. He daily takes the challenge to outwork others, and always gives his best no matter what the task.”

That effort has sparked the Dolphins at different points of the season, and the excitement Saturday was palpable. And Josh is just getting started.

“Being new to the sport he is still developing his strengths, and as a result most all his matches are close,” Effner finished. “He’s a slow starter which usually means he’s behind in points the first part of matches, but then he comes roaring back, often in dramatic fashion. He listens very well; even in the heat of the battle he’s very coachable. He serves as great inspiration to others that good things can happen if you prepare well, believe in yourself, and have a warrior spirit.”
